Safety Drill #2: Testing smoke detectors
Smoke detectors save lives. It is important to have at leas tone smoke detector on every level of your home, preferably in the hallway near your bedrooms to wake you in case of fire.
Here are some tips to make sure your smoke detector works properly:
- Test your smoke detector every month by pressing the “Test Button” on the face of the detector. If your smoke detector fails the test, replace the battery and repeat. If it continues to fail, replace the detector with a new one.
- Replace your smoke detector battery at least once a year on a specific date, like your birthday. (Use regular batteries instead of rechargeable batteries)
- When a battery is low on power the detector will “chirp”. Replace the battery immediately and test the detector.
- Replace your smoke detector every 10 years. The sensor in your detector will wear out and become less sensitive as the detector gets older. (30% failure rate after 10 years)
- You can maintain your detector by gently vacuuming the outside with the small brush attachment from your vacuum. You may also wipe it with a small cloth.
If you have any questions about anything you have read here please get your Mom or Dad to explain it and help you. “Design your Home Escape Plan”. Test your smoke detector then practice your escape plan!
Safety Drill of the Month: Plan your escape
To reduce your risk from fire, we encourage you to sit down with your entire family and develop a home escape plan. Use the grid provided and follow the steps below. Remember to practice your plan regularly to keep your family safe in the event of a fire.
- Draw a floor plan of your home, marking all doors and windows.
- Plans two ways out of every room. The first way would likely be the door…the second could be the window. Consider buying a Home Escape Ladder for the windows of upper level bedrooms. Make sure all windows open easily and are free from curtains or shades while trying to exit.
- If you live in a multi-level building, always use the stairs, never the elevator, in case of fire. It is important that you familiarize yourself with the fire safety plan for your building.
- Always sleep with your doors closed! Keeping the smoke out of your room is so important and it buys you time to react calmly and properly in case of fire.
- Choose a safe meeting place outside for all family members and mark it with a X on your plan. Once there, account for everybody.
- Practice your plan at least twice a year. Practice it during the day and also at night. Your reactions will be different.
- Be sure to include family pets into your plan.
- Remember: "Once you get out, Stay OUT!" Do not go back in for anything…and call 911 from a safe phone.
