Calgary, AB - Ryan McNish, the Calgary Roughnecks hard-nosed defender, is a full-time member of Canada’s armed forces, and as such is always under the threat of being sent to a war-torn country where bullets, not punches, settle disputes.
With Canada’s heavy involvement in Afghanistan, it was fully expected that McNish, an aviation systems technician, would soon be sent to join his comrades in the dangerous Kandahar area.
But word has come down that McNish’s Edmonton unit will not be placed under a state of high readiness until July, 2007. At that time, it is almost certain he will be sent overseas.
“Obviously, as a member of the armed forces, I am quite prepared – and in fact, want – to fight for my country,” said McNish. “Why else would I enlist for a long-term engagement?
“But as it is, I am delighted to be able to get in another full season with the Roughnecks. Those guys (the Calgary team) are like a band of brothers to me. The camaraderie is fantastic and I can’t wait to go to war with them again.”
Roughnecks’ General Manager Kurt Silcott said, “We are delighted to learn that we have Ryan’s services for the upcoming season. He is one of our outstanding young guns and I consider him an integral part of our defence.”
McNish, 25, joined the Riggers just prior to the 2005 season via a trade with the Toronto Rock. He is 6-foot-2 and weighs in at 230 lbs.
In 26 games for the Roughnecks, he has registered 13 points (5g, 8a), collected 61 loose balls and picked up 59 penalty minutes.
