ROUGHNECKS FORECAST TO COME SECOND IN WEST
Calgary, AB - Inside Lacrosse, one of the sport’s most respected magazines, is projecting Calgary to come second in the National Lacrosse League’s highly competitive West Division in 2007.

The Colorado Mammoth, the current NLL champions, are picked to come first, followed by Calgary, Arizona, Portland, and Edmonton with San Jose at the bottom of the pack.

Brian Shanahan, Inside Lacrosse’s NLL Editor, says that by winning the Champion’s Cup in 2006, the Mammoth finally got the monkey off their backs and fulfilled the expectations of the talent-loaded team.

“Although they have the toughest schedule in the NLL this year, expect coach Gary Gait’s low-key approach to keep Colorado in first place,” he forecasts.

Shanahan claims Calgary was one of the busiest teams in the NLL in the off-season, with General Manager Kurt Silcott pulling “the trigger on a bevy of trades. Some of which left many shaking their heads.”

Among those gone from last year’s squad is former Champion’s Cup MVP goalie Curtis Palidwor, clutch scorer Kevin Dostie and power-play sniper Jason Wulder.

According to Shanahan, “Silcott will either be a goat or genius when the dust settles.”

When it comes to scoring, Shanahan says Calgary is in good shape, with Tracey Kelusky, Lewis Ratcliff, Kaleb Toth and Kyle Goundrey forming the nucleus of one of the NLL’s strongest offences.

“Jeff Shattler, a pure athlete that came over in the Dostie trade, will also put up some points,” says Shanahan. “(and) enigmatic forward Kerry Susheski, who this summer broke a 72-year-old record by scoring nine goals in a Western Lacrosse Association game, comes over from Edmonton with a lot of potential, though he has yet to make his mark in the NLL.”

Shanahan rates defence as the strong point of the Calgary team, “as they have size, speed and toughness with the likes of Taylor Wray, Ryan McNish and Andrew McBride.”

He was not so complimentary about the club’s goaltending which he describes as Calgary’s “biggest question mark.”
