Calgary, AB – Calgary Roughnecks general manager Kurt Silcott announced today that the club has signed defencemen Kyle Couling and Craig Gelsvik as franchise players. Dealing is pending league approval. Terms of the deal were not disclosed as club policy.
Franchising both of these players ensures that they will not be able to sign as unrestricted free agents to any other team in the league.
An unrestricted free agent is any player who is the age of 32 or older and has played in a minimum of six seasons in the National lacrosse league or the Major Indoor Lacrosse League.
Each team is allowed to sign two franchise players.
Gelsvik, 33, was acquired by the Roughnecks in 2004 from the Buffalo Bandits in exchange for Kyle Laverty. Calgary also received a 2nd round pick in the NLL’s 2005 entry draft while Buffalo got a 4th round selection in 2006.
The 6’ 3”, 230 lbs defenceman played in 16 regular season games with the Roughnecks in 2007. He collected 45 loose balls and picked up 36 penalty minutes. He has played 104 career games tallying 32 points (1 goal, 31 assists), 428 loose balls and 222 total penalty minutes.
Kyle Couling, 34, native of Port Moody, BC who was just traded to the Roughnecks in the three way deal with Buffalo, Calgary and Philadelphia early last week sending Taylor Wray to the Philadelphia Wings in exchange the “Necks acquired goaltender Steve Dietrich, Kyle Couling and Ian Llord in the deal.
The 6 foot, 190 lbs defenceman has collected 66 career points (19 goals, 47 assists) in 125 career games, 218 penalty minutes and 565 loose balls all with the Buffalo Bandits.
"In Kyle Couling and Craig Gelsvik we have two big punishing defenders that are also great leaders,” said Roughnecks general manager Kurt Silcott. “It's quite comforting looking at the back door and seeing those two guys patrolling."
The National Lacrosse League is set to announce all of the Franchise players on their web site tomorrow. Please visit www.nll.com for further details.
