CALGARY, AB - For the second time in franchise history the Calgary Roughnecks captured the Champion's Cup, this time with a 12-10 win over the New York Titans on Saturday night.
Josh Sanderson scored twice and added three assists, while goalie Matt King stopped 32 of 42 shots he faced as the Roughnecks won the 2009 National Lacrosse League title in front of 13,042 hometown fans. The Riggers also won the Champion's Cup in 2004 at home with a 14-11 victory over the Buffalo Bandits.
For his efforts, Sanderson was named most valuable player of the Champion's Cup.
Kaleb Toth notched a goal and five assists for the Roughnecks, while Dane Dobbie scored twice and set up two others. Bruce Codd (2g, 1a), Tracey Kelusky (1g, 2a), Scott Ranger (1g, 1a) and Nolan Heavenor (2a) also had multiple-point games for Calgary, while Curt Malawsky, Jeff Shattler and Mike Carnegie also scored.
Casey Powell led all New York scorers with four goals and two assists, while Brendan Mundorf (2g, 3a), Pat Maddalena (1g, 4a), Ryan Boyle (1g, 3a), Jordan Hall (1g, 3a) and Matt Alrich (1g, 1a) also had strong offensive showings. Goalie Matt Vinc played well in the New York net and finished with 38 saves.
The Titans opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 1:31 of the first quarter when Maddalena converted a feed from Mundorf.
Less than three minutes later with the Riggers enjoying a two-man advantage, Kelusky picked the top corner behind Vinc to tie the game at 1-1.
Malawsky then redirected a pass from Kelusky past Vinc at 9:08 of the opening frame before Mundorf tied up the contest once again just 50 seconds later.
Early in the second quarter, Shattler forced a turnover and used his amazing speed to break in alone into the New York zone before firing a shot past Vinc. Dobbie then took a pass from Kelusky and shoveled a high shot over Vinc's shoulder to put Calgary up 4-2.
After King made a pair of nice shoulder saves on shots by Hall and Mundorf, Powell fired a low shot past the Calgary netminder. Alrich then tied the game at 4-4 when he spun around a check by Codd and fired a shot off the far post and into the Calgary net behind King.
With 30.6 seconds to go in the third quarter, Sanderson cut in behind New York defenceman Patrick Merrill before bouncing a shot behind Vinc to put Calgary up by a goal once again. Then, as time expired in the half, Toth fired a heavy long-range shot past Vinc, who argued - to no avail - that the buzzer sounded before the ball crossed the line.
At 1:58 of the third quarter, Hall let go a shot through a screen that fooled King and found its way into the net.
A short time later with Calgary on a power play, Sanderson ripped a shot off the post behind Vinc before King stopped a breakaway attempt by Hall. Calgary's sustained pressure then paid off when Dobbie picked up a bounce pass from Toth and whipped a shot into the top corner to put the Riggers up 7-5.
The Titans refused to quit though and pulled to within a goal before the end of the third quarter when Powell tricked the entire Calgary defence by bouncing a shot through his own legs and into the net behind King.
New York tied the contest at 7-7 at the 42-second mark of the final frame when Mundorf wired a high shot past King. Just 31 seconds later, Ranger snapped a shot past Vinc to put Calgary back up by one.
Codd then put Calgary up by a pair when he raced into the New York zone and counted his first goal of the 2009 playoffs even though he was being checked to the floor by both Boyle and Bill Greer.
Sanderson extended Calgary's lead to 10-7 when he bounced a shot past Vinc before Powell scored a pair of goals to pull the Titans within a goal.
With just a minute to play, New York coach Ed Comeau called a timeout to set up a final play and pulled Vinc in favour of an extra attacker. The strategy backfired as the Riggers promptly gained control of the ball. With Vinc racing to get back to his net, Mike Carnegie fired the ball into an empty net before the New York goalie could get there.
Codd added an empty-net goal before Boyle added a late marker for New York to round out the scoring.
