CALGARY, AB - The Calgary Roughnecks selected power forward Carlton Schuss 27th overall in the third round of the 2009 National Lacrosse League's Entry Draft Wednesday.
Schuss, a native of Ladner, BC, plays alongside the Delta Islanders of the BCJALL. Known for his size and strength, Schuss notched 75 points, including 37 goals and 38 assists in 20 games with Delta this season. In that time, the 220-pound Islander racked up 107 penalty minutes.
NLLInsider.com called Schuss as strong as an ox. ‘The kind of guy you hate to play against, but love to have in your locker room.'
The Roughnecks also drafted defenceman Garrett Werschke 51st overall and transition player Casey MacIntyre 62nd overall. Both players are native Calgarians and play alongside each other with the Calgary Jr. A Raiders.
Werschke tallied 11 goals and eight assists for 19 points this season for the Jr. A Raiders, while MacIntyre recorded 58 points, including 20 goals and 38 assists, while collecting 104 loose balls.
During the 2009 playoffs, MacIntyre notched 24 points (9g,15a), while Werschke grabbed 10 points (7g,3a).
Rochester, who had the draft's first and second overall picks, selected Syracuse University and Six Nations' defenceman Sid Smith first and took forward/transition player Ilija Gajic second overall. Gajic, a University of Denver player, is currently playing for the Mann Cup with the New Westminster Salmonbellies.
