CALGARY, AB –Calgary Roughnecks President and General Manager Brad Banister announced today that the club has acquired transition player Rob Van Beek from the Philadelphia Wings in exchange for Calgary's second round draft pick in the 2010 NLL Entry Draft.
“He's one of the elitist defensive players in the league, great transition player,” said Banister. “We have big hopes he will crack the lineup.”
Van Beek, who spent the last five seasons with the Philadelphia Wings, tallied 14 points, including four goals and 10 assists in 16 games last season. In that time, the 26-year-old forward collected 83 loose balls and 11 penalty minutes.
The native of Port Couquitlam, BC was originally drafted by the Wings in the first round (5th overall) in the 2004 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft.
In 72 career games, Van Beek has notched 22 goals, 59 assists for 81 points. In that time, he has also collected 390 loose balls and 180 penalty minutes.
“He is a blood and guts character guy who possesses the intangibles we look for in a player,” added Roughnecks Head Coach Dave Pym. “Our camp just became that much more competitive.”
The Calgary Roughnecks kick-off the 2010 season on Sunday, January 10th at the Pengrowth Saddledome against the Minnesota Swarm.
